Every year, the Chester Christmas Market returns to its usual location, namely the Town Hall Square, attracting locals and tourists alike to the heart of the city. The market features 70 different wooden stalls, each offering their own unique products such as food, drink and gifts, among other things. As you walk along the stalls, you can also see various entertainment for children and street musicians, which create a unique and pleasant atmosphere.
“The atmosphere here is just magical,” says Jane Morison, a local resident. “ I come here every year to buy handmade jewellery. This is how I start my winter season and my whole family knows how much I love it.”
The most attractive items for visitors are handicrafts and jewellery. As for food, hot drinks such as chocolate and mulled wine disappear very quickly from the shelves. The same is true for sausages, fried potatoes and sweets, which are so popular with children. The sounds of a saxophone or guitar from street musicians are especially attractive, warming the soul even more on these cold days. The brightly lit Christmas tree is the centrepiece of the whole event and the long queue of people queuing up to take photos every evening shows that people love this kind of entertainment in Chester.
Ellie Steer, a first-time visitor from Manchester, said: “I have been to many Christmas markets, but Chester’s is special. The location, surrounded by architecture, adds to the charm. Although it’s not as big as Liverpool or London, it’s the homely feel that draws us here.”
Despite the festive New Year mood, shopkeepers complain about rising prices and comparatively lower profits than last year. They say that goods are selling well, but that inflation has significantly affected their ability to buy materials. Therefore, vendors were forced to set adequate prices for visitors in order to recoup at least some of their profits during the market.
The fair will run until 22 December, offering residents and tourists delicious food, music and entertainment.
